How does digital television really work and how come it works so much better than normal transmission methods?
Digital transmissions are better-quality because they manage convert sounds and images into digital computer data to transmit them. Once all of this digital data has been received, it is reassembled by the receiver that is attached to the television, and changed back into the initial sound and picture. Although this appears a much longer process of transmitting the data, the main advantages are the better sound and picture quality that occur. Transmission is always very clear because the picture does not have that grainy effect, as the digital tuner that is attached to the receiver removes all kinds of interference from the signals prior to converting them back to the original sounds and images. This results in a far superior quality of sound and picture which in turn leads to superior quality viewing.
Digital television also has an added advantage of possessing a user friendly interface whereby the user may view all the television listings in advance, as opposed to having to search through random channels just to find out when their favourite program happens to be on.
Another great benefit of digital television is the ability to compress the transmission in order to use much less bandwidth. This obviously means that even more channels can be transmitted over the same air or cable frequency. As HDTV uses a large amount of bandwidth, digital television transmissions are a much better way for the transmission HDTV signals, in spite of which medium of transmission is used.
With digital television you either experience high quality television viewing with a perfect picture quality or you view nothing at all. If you compare this to the old, analogue transmissions which still managed to supply a picture even with degraded quality.
There happens to be another nuisance with the new technology and this problem is that the television sets do not have the provision to tune into the new digital waves. This problem could be rectified though, by purchasing one of the new generations of television sets or buying a digital tuner which can be attached to a normal television to give the same effect.
Digital television will vastly improve television viewing by improving the quality of the images and sounds received, and by also increasing the available bandwidth but at the end of the day, the final verdict will rest with the consumers.
