What are the Pros and Cons of Broadband Telephone Services?
By: Robert Pierre
In todays modern world we are heavily reliant upon our technology. As a technology driven civilization we have become used to everything working at the touch of a button. Broadband or Internet Telephony as you may know it, is one of the latest developments in the communications revolution that is rapidly assuming its place in our world.
With an internet connection, broadband telephone calls can be made simply and quickly by using the existing connection to communicate with voice rather than messaging or email. Using internet based technology you get the anytime, anywhere ability to search, research and communicate with the more personal presence of a voice rather than impersonal email text that frequently does not convey the communication cues that a voice call offers. Given that transferring data for voice transmission really requires a good quality internet connection using cable or DSL rather than a satellite wireless or dial-up connection.
So how does a broadband telephone service differ from a normal phone service:
1) Reliability - as compared to the standard house phone a broadband phone service is less reliable and relies completely on the functioning of the internet connection. If the internet connection is down a broadband phone wont work. If your ISP (Internet Service Provider) is highly reliable then this would be less of a problem.
2) Portability - one of the key features of a broadband phone. Portability would mean number portability. This service allows you to continue with the same telephone number which you owned prior to subscribing. You could exercise your discretion to keep the same number or change it.
3. Security - broadband telephony providers secure the number use by a lock-in preventing alteration of users on the service account. If you wish to change the account users then you should be prepared for high charges from the broadband telephony provider to be the result.
4. Quality - call quality has greatly improved with broadband telephony and with a good provider and a good internet connection you will not readily notice the difference from a normal land line. Generally speaking however, broadband telephone calls are not as good a quality as your land line.
Broadband telephone services are not a universal panacea as there are some downsides to the service compared to a normal telephone. Comparing the pricing and portability of the service however, broadband telephony has a distinct advantage over a land line phone service.
To ensure uninterrupted broadband phone service make sure you shop for an efficient plan. Keep in mind key factors like cost for the plan, reliability, ISP, and internet protocol that the broadband phone service uses. Technical advances might tempt you to go for the latest, but make sure you do your homework before you make a decision.
