Using Your Apple Iphone Overseas

By: Chris Simpson

Apart from allowing you to stay in touch with your friends and family your Apple iPhone may also form a key part of your business life. Whatever you need to do whether it be share prices, reading your e-mails or conducting conference calls the chances are that you do it on your iPhone. Since it plays such a key role in conducting your business you may be worried that you won't be able to use your iPhone when your need to travel to amount country. This is especially true if you are going to be away for an extended time period.

Like most cell phones, the iPhone works with a particular cell phone carrier, and in this case you have your service through AT&T/Cingular. Many business professionals want the security in knowing that their cell phone service will not be disrupted simply because they travel from country to country. Since the iPhone is serviced by AT&T/Cingular, you will not have to worry about losing service, or features, because the iPhone uses the GSM system. GSM is an acronym that stands for Global System for Mobile communication, thus allowing you to use your cell phone in many different countries. Actually, there are over one hundred countries around the world that use GSM, thus allowing you to keep using your iPhone without any hindrance to cell service.

In most cases business travellers from the United States tend to travel to either Europe or Asia. In both cases you can be confident of still being able to use your iPhone without interruption since they both use GSM. Although your phone will work abroad you still need to be aware of the possibility of running up large phone bills for general phone and data usage.

This is because your number is an American telephone number, thus every call you make within another country is looked upon by your carrier as an international call. If you are overseas for quite some time, than it is easy to accumulate several hundred dollars worth of fees and roaming charges, this is why you will want to alter you calling plan if you travel overseas frequently.

One good thing about your carrier being AT&T/Cingular is that they offer some great international calling plans that will greatly reduce your roaming and international call fees. You may also want to look into their international data plans if you want to use the iPhone's web browser while you are away. By planning ahead before you travel you can save yourself a very nasty surprise on your return and open your cell phone bill.
