Tips On Horse Safety

By: Dave Jensen

Like most of the beautiful things in life, horses are beautiful and lovely creatures. To deal with them you would need to take some precautions. There are no instances of horses intentionally hurting someone or another animal, but like it's rightly said accidents do take place. They say prevention is better than cure!! Like wise it is a good idea to know how to avoid such situations even before they could occur.

While knowing about Barn safety, you may have to keep in mind that all barn equipment should be stored in a proper storage area. Places where a horse could step on them or a human could possibly trip over them should be avoided. All equipments like rakes, forks and other things should be stored in a place that is out of reach.

On a regular basis the barn needs to be swept and kept clean so that there are no foreign objects like nails that could damage the horses hoof. This would also prevent your feet from getting hurt. Always remember to be in proper attire while visiting a barn, which would ensure safety for your feet. Avoid wearing sandals or open toed shoe. To protect your feet the best-suggested thing would be to wear a sneaker or shoes.

Always keep in mind about the nearness between the horse and you, while standing near the animal. When it is required to walk behind the animal remember to walk close to the horse as much as possible. There are possibilities of the horse kicking when it gets nervous or distressed. You can avoid this by walking close to the animal thus preventing the animal any room for kicking.

Do not allow the animal to get into the barn by itself. Always lead your horse to the barn. It is a good idea to train your horse for this so that it becomes safe for other people or animals present at the time the horse starts kicking in the barn. While taking the horse into the barn try using a lead rope for this purpose rather then using a halter. Using a lead rope will give you more control. While doing so, keep in mind not to hook your fingers through the halter straps or rings. There are chances of your fingers getting caught and injured if the horse tries to pull away.

Most of time people get hurt around horses it is because the horse was spooked and was attempting to get away from whatever spooked it, so always remember when handling your horse or even just watching a horse to take basic safety precautions.

Horses and other animals may not get along very well so it is best to keep them apart from each other until you learn how your horse interacts with others.

Safety is of critical importance for the both of you so try to memorize the safety advice given here and use it all the time, this way you will have a safe and enjoyable time with your horse.
