Replacement Birth Certificates - How to Get a Copy

Since the United States does not have a centralized birth records maintenance. Each state has to maintain its own birth records. These records are maintained at the Bureau of Vital Statistics or the state Health Department. Some towns or counties may also have copies of the birth certificates.
If you are aged around 70 or more, you may not find your birth certificate at the state level, as they have records only from the 1900s. So, you will have to check out at the local town or county for this certificate.
This can sometimes prove to be a problem as local records in the rural areas could have been lost because of floods or fires.
Most people are under the impression that copies of birth certificates will be available at the hospital where they were born; however, this is not true. The hospital may have a record related to your birth but they cannot give a replacement birth certificate.
A replacement birth certificate can only be issued at the state level, which is responsible for the maintenance of all birth records belonging to the state.
If you are requesting a birth certificate, you will be asked to submit your request for the birth certificate in writing, giving all your details, such as your full name as it appeared on your birth certificate, your parent’s full names etc. You will also have to mention that it is your birth certificate you are looking for, as these certificates are only given to the person concerned, or the parents, siblings, legal guardians and the grandparents.
If you are filling up an official birth certificate replacement form, you will also need to give some more information, which includes a letter giving the reason why you need the certificate. You will also have to pay the fee required to obtain the birth certificate.
