Relaxing and Preparing to Listen to Self Hypnosis CDs

By: xdavid

Throughout my 20 years of practicing hypnotherapy, I have had many people wanting to learn how to practice self help hypnosis. CDs and self help books are available by the truckload that teach these things, but I still have folks looking for simple ways to practice self hypnosis. In response, I have come up with five steps to tapping into a patient's inner potential through appropriate input. Simply stated, the five steps are: preparation, relaxation, deepening, suggestion and termination. In this article, we'll focus on the first two steps, since there is a great deal to cover just within those.

If you've read any self help books about hypnosis or listened to any self hypnosis CDs, you know that preparing your space is integral to the process. Preparation is creating a time and place for relaxation. Choosing the same time to practice hypnosis or listen to self hypnosis CDs triggers the subconscious mind to reinforce those suggestions whenever that time of day rolls around. Now, the same time does not mean 6:00 every morning or 11:00 every night. That quickly leads to a feeling of disappointment if you're unable to make that time for yourself. Instead, choose a realistic time in your routine--before you take a shower, during lunch break, or before you go to bed.

Make self hypnosis a ritual, not just another part of your schedule. We are not only suggestible, we are also creatures of habit. Ritual makes your time special-- try a candle, some music, perhaps an aroma. In essence, the more we prepare our environment for self hypnosis, the more we ground our suggestions in our lives. Every conscious preparation become a subconscious trigger which reinforces our desires.

Practicing self hypnosis in the same place also reinforces the desired suggestions. Simply sitting or lying in that place will trigger what you are trying to accomplish. If possible it should be a unique place that you usually don't use and where little activity occurs–not at the kitchen table, the computer desk or even your bed. All these are filled with many experiences that quickly cloud your fragile seedling of "new thought." Find a new place. Sit in that chair in the corner you never use or the hammock in the backyard.

Relaxation is the ability to move from fight/flight to rest/repose. Fight/flight is output mode--being prepared to respond to one's environment. Rest and repose is input mode--the absence of the need to respond to one's environment. Being able to practice self hypnosis (whether you're practicing without guidance or using self help hypnosis cds) without the phone ringing or the kids screaming is very important. Ritual is an ally to relaxing, which helps once to be conscious of one's environment, adapting it to match one's desire to retreat from outside stimulation.
