Let Cyrano Broadway Bowl You Over!

By: Al Terry

Watching Cyrano Broadway has become something of a tradition come theater season. This play has been one of the most popular plays ever to grace the Broadway stage which is quite a feat, considering that this was originally a French play written way back in 1897.

Something Special

There are a number of reasons why Cyrano Broadway is such a special piece of work. The play was written by Edmond Rostand and is in fact based on the real life of Cryano de Bergerac. Perhaps this is what makes the story all the more poignant. The entire play is written in rhyming couplets which have 12 syllables in every line. Apart from this meticulous structure, the play is also known for its in-depth research- in fact even the names have been faithfully conveyed to a tee.

Not only has Cyrano Broadway been such a hit during Broadway season, it has also been translated into a number of different languages. It was an instant success when it was performed for the first time- in fact the original actor to play the role of Cyrano, Constant Coquelin played the role no less than 400 times and even brought the show to North America. As for Broadway, the show ran for 232 shows and has featured many top actors in the role of Cyrano.

A True Tragic Hero

One of the appeals of Cyrano Broadway is the fact that it outlines the life of a true tragic hero. When it comes to heroes, it is interesting to note that it's often not their superpowers but their flaws that make them more attractive to their audience. These flaws make them human and we are able to sympathize with their plight. This is precisely what happens in the story of Cyrano. Cyrano is almost the perfect man- he is a talented duelist, a wonderful poet, in short he is a man of many talents who is unfortunately also strong willed.

It is interesting to note that Cyrano, who is brash in so many ways, finds his resolve desert him completely when it comes to professing his love to Roxane. The reason for this may seem to be quite trivial- his large nose. But his insecurity about his looks grows so strong that he becomes convinced that he can never win Roxane's love. The audience can't help but shake its head when Cyrano even helps his friend Christian win Roxane's love by writing her letters which he says are written by Christian.

While watching Cyrano Broadway, the audience can't help but pray that Cyrano will find the courage to tell Roxane the truth. Even when she tells Christian that she loves him for his soul and not his looks, Cyrano cannot bring himself to tell her he truth. In the end, he never tells her- it is she who finally understands the truth but by then it is too late. This classic tale of love and loss never grows old in the telling and one of the best ways to see it is on Broadway.
