Learning Piano Is A Enriching Experience For Your Child

By: Nick Clipton

Generally young children who enjoy educational activities such as reading, coloring, crafts and word games also enjoy playing the piano. One reason is because they enjoy doing things with their hands. Did you know that there are games and activities available like this for young children that will give them a musical foundation as well? If you plan to give your young child piano lessons or if your child is taking piano lessons they can benefit greatly from musical games and activities at home. There are many foundational keyboard abilities children can learn at home while having fun that will give them a musical head start in piano.

*Learning the musical alphabet in a variety of ways

*Drawing and Visualizing the Piano Keyboard

*Learning to use their hands at the piano

*Learning keyboard theory concepts for note reading

*Visualizing five-finger hand positions and finger numbers

*Learning music is an enriching experience. It is said to not only broaden a child’s imagination, but also stimulates the child’s mind, developing the child’s IQ.

This knowledge is not difficult to give your children at home. All you need are the right resources and of course a keyboard. You'll be giving your child musical values and educational opportunities that will prepare them for a positive future of learning. Piano lessons also help children learn

• key reading and math skills;

• how to set goals to achieve their dreams; and

• the need for self discipline and persistence; and

• how to take responsibility for their success.

Most parents choose the piano as the instrument for their child to begin their serious music education on. Why the popular view that the piano is a more accessible beginner instrument, as compared to other musical instruments? Actually the sitting position while playing the piano is very comfortable. The player does not need to support the instrument, as compared to the neck-position one has to assume in order to clutch the violin securely while playing. Moreover visually, the pitches in music are clearly and systematically laid out on the keyboard, as compared to the violin or voice where it is not immediately clear where exact pitches are. Atlast the production of sound on the piano is also easy with the depression of keys. It takes more skill to produce more than out-of-tune “squawks” from the violin.

Nowadays in Singapore, due to good foundational education at progressively younger ages, a child may know his or her alphabets, numbers, as well as a sizeable collection of nouns, when he or she is merely four years old. Alphabets are useful in note-naming in music. Also, counting in order to keep a steady pulse is very important in music.

Therefore, today, children may start piano lessons seriously and successfully when they are as young as four years old, or even three and a half years old. However, the success of starting piano early also depends on the temperament of the child, as some discipline is required in order to sit and concentrate at the piano for a period of time.
