By: Coach Steve

It's very difficult to not become an identity theft victim. There are however, six simple things you can do to help lessen the risk. Below are the 6 things you can do.

1) Look at your driving report:

Insurance companies go over your driving record from time to time, and so should you. You want to make sure that your record doesn't have any dings that you don't know about. If there are some dings on your report that your not familiar with, it could mean that someone is using your drivers license information. This is a sign that your identity has been compromised.

2) When you get a new computer, delete Or remove all your personal information from your old computer.

3) You can use a "wipe" program or drill a few holes in your hard drive.

Use your initials instead of your full name. Your social security number is not required to be on your checks, DO NOT USE IT. Your checks are viewed by many people, so again, limit the information you have printed on them.

Secure Your Mailbox

Because of the personal information contained in your mailbox, it is a high priority target for identity thieves. A new mailbox with a lock these days is a must.

5) Your Trash Bin Is A Target Of Identity Thieves, Be Careful What You Throw In It.

Identity thieves will look for information in your trash. Junk mail is an avenue for them due to some personal information that is contained in some junk mail pieces. Tear up, use scissors, or get a shredder and use it.

6) Invest In an Identity Theft Protection Program:

You can, for a low monthly fee purchase an Identity Theft Protection Plan. There are several out there such as lifelock and Identity Theft Shield from Prepaid Legal.
