As anyone who has suffered a panic attack can tell you, they are extremely terrifying and upsetting experiences. They are periods of extreme anxiety and fear which occur without warning.

The symptoms of a panic attack include:

- Increased amounts of sweating

- Rapid breathing

- Pounding heart rate

- Scary thoughts

- Feeling out of control

- Feeling of excitement

- Dream-like sensation or perceptual distortion

- Feeling of losing free will

- Extreme anxiety or nervousness

Panic attacks can last up to ten minutes.

The "fight or flight" phenomenon is responsible for panic attacks. This is your body's way of protecting you from danger by flooding your body's system with adrenaline in preparation for a fight or to flee in response to perceived threat. However, in the case of panic attacks this response occurs without a specific trigger of danger.

Sources of Panic Attack

The causes of panic attack include an overly cautious view of the world, accumulated stress and major personal loss, such as a death of a significant other. Drugs with strong psychological effects can also be a cause of panic attacks.

Panic attack can also occur in conjunction with other psychological illness and are typically a symptom of the underlying condition. Such psychological conditions include obsessive compulsive disorder, post traumatic stress and generalized anxiety.

Panic Attack Remedies

One of the more successful treatments of panic attack is a combination of psychological and pharmacological remedies. That is, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) - a psychological techniques - and anti-anxiety drugs.

Today, there are also many products on the market created by former sufferers of panic attacks. These products allow people having panic attacks to undergo a home study course to help treat their condition. The authors of these products have typically overcome their own panic attacks without drugs.
