We attended the recent consumer electronics show, and noted with great interest various new camcorder models. With a number of new features, these new models vary in price range and offer new technological enhancements of interest to anyone considering a camcorder purchase. Our staff examined these new models and compiled a list of five factors to consider before you buy.
Tip One: Consider What You Really Need
New face detection technology, available now in select Sony and Panasonic models, allows the camcorder to automatically fix annoying face blurring and over exposure problems. Before you take the plunge, consider whether or not you've been happy with this aspect of your video recording. If not, a new model with face detection technology will be well worth your investment. It really comes down to asking yourself if face detection technology is a must-have upgrade.
Tip Two: Are You A Steady Hand?
Your current camcorder likely offers some form of image stabilization, which helps compensate for a jittery hand while shooting video. There are two types of image stabilization - electronic and optical. The more advanced and reliable of the two is optical image stabilization, and it's more expensive as well. Decide whether you're a steady hand while taking video, and determine whether or not your results warrant a higher investment in optical stabilization.
Tip Three: Long Timer Or Short Timer?
Ask yourself how long your video shoots are before investing in an upgraded battery. If your shoots are generally less than an hour long, the standard battery is fine for your needs. You can invest in a higher capacity battery, if necessary, at an added cost of $75 or so.
Tip Four: What Screen Size Is Best?
If you shoot a lot of video outdoors, make sure your screen will yield good results in bright sunlight. Conversely, if you use your camcorder primarilly indoors in lower light levels, be certain you have the appropriate shutter mode, lest your video turn out blurry. Taking lighting factors into consideration and buying a model with appropriate screen size is a huge factor as to whether you'll be happy with your purchase or not.
Tip Five: Recording The Sound You Intended To Record
Most people use a camcorder to record sound as much as video. If sound and sound quality is important to you, consider a model with a zoom microphone. A zoom microphone will autmatically engage when the zoom lens mode is operating. This will minimize any sound coming from you as the video operator. In other models, it's quite common for your voice to completely drown out the voices of those you're videoing. A zoom microphone eliminates that problem.
If you're considering a camcorder purchase, be certain to fit your new camcorder with your usage pattern. It's one thing to own the latest bells and whistles, but quite another if you're paying for features you'll rarely use. Consider these and other buying tips to ensure you'll get the most productive use of your new camcorder.
New camcorder technology continues to evolve and change, much like any other technology. Make sure you carefully evaluate all models and features before buying your next camcorder. Have more questions or concerns? Visit us for more tips and reviews of the latest new camcorders.
